SEPTEMBER 2018
The Abyss Gazes Back

This optional form is intended to provide the Plot Team with information to incorporate into the story for the September 2018 Event, The Abyss Gazes Back. The main story thread for this event will focus on character fears and phobias.

We will be utilizing content warnings and red flags when an encounter might incorporate the following themes or phobias: isolation, claustrophobia, trypophobia, extreme gore, sensory deprivation, loud noises, loss of limbs or mobility.  Most of this content will not occur in highly visible areas, and there will be a designated ‘safe zone’ wherein this content will absolutely not occur.

As normally, you may use phase-out at any point. This is a mechanic allows you, the player, agency in situations where you find yourself uncomfortable or, worse, triggered. To use this mechanic, you simply call “phase-out” like you would any other skill and put your hand on your head, indicating you are out of game. In game, your character enters the Phase, which, as a normal part of the in-game day to day, is not weird and should not cause any undue suspicion; out of game, this is your opportunity to take care of yourself in whatever way is necessary. If you need to take a five second/five minute breather and come back, do it. If you need to remove yourself entirely, do it. If you need to ask a safety marshal to help you get food/water/to a quiet place, do it. This is about you protecting you.

Please also utilize the standard check-in gestures. If someone signals you with the ‘OK’ or ‘thumbs up’ gesture, subtly signal in reply (out of character) with either a thumbs up, flat hand if you are not feeling it, or thumbs down if you don’t like what’s going on. Likewise, you may use this method to check in on other players if you are concerned they (the player, rather than the character) are not doing okay.

This event is an invitation to explore themes which frighten or scare your character. While this may have some overlap with your own fears and phobias, we encourage you to also be mindful of your own comfort. We prefer you take care of yourselves and play to your comfort level, rather than try to push yourself in ways that may do more harm than good.

Does your PC have any phobias you would be comfortable exploring in game?

Are there any in-game myths, urban legends, or stories of which your PC is afraid? These do not have to be rooted in species packets or lore, and can be specific to your character. (100 words or fewer)
